If this is the wrong newsgroup, please direct me to another one. This
is my first or second post to Google Groups.

I'm Dennis, and I've worked at a local print shop in Virginia for
several years. I've run two-color work on A.B. Dick presses, but have
no experience with four-color process. My employer has printed four-
color CMYK process on an A.B. Dick 9995 press (true two-color) by
printing cyan and magenta, then washing the press and inking up with
yellow and black. The final job looked quite nice, in my and his
opinion. To save cleanup time, my employer is thinking about getting
a four-color offset press from Heidelberg. When I asked him what the
advantage is of a four-color press rather than buying a second A.B.
Dick true two-color press and letting two colors of ink on one and two
colors on the other, I was told that the blankets on the two presses
won't be packed the same and the registration will vary. However, I
have seen high-quality CMYK process work printed on a single two-color
press through multiple passes.

My question: Since the A.B. Dick 9995 has two separate towers with two
separate heads, why will that register any better on two-pass than two
separate presses? This press has a registration board which jogs
every sheet, and the registration is very close. I don't see why he
wants to spend the money for a four-color press when he could get a
two-color press for a whole lot less. Maybe someone with four-color
printing experience could explain this to me. Thanks!

I can't explain *why* devoting each press to a pair of colours doesn't
work, but I can at least *confirm* that it didn't when we tried it where
I work, using a pair of Komori 2-colour presses.

We were unable to get good enough registration between the two presses.

Hope this is some help,

Thank you for your help, Alastair. I still don't understand why it
doesn't work to do that, but I guess I can't argue with reality.
Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with me.

Dennis
